My First Prayer Quilt

This was one of the most meaningful projects I’ve done in a long time.  I really loved how the quilt came out.  A dear friend at our church was diagnosed with cancer and we wanted to make a prayer quilt for her.  I browsed through Pinterest (have I said recently how much I LOVE Pinterest) for ideas.  Most of the prayer quilts used a basic square pattern.  The idea behind a prayer quilt is that ribbons or yarn or thread are attached to the blocks and when someone says a prayer for the quilt owner, they tie a knot in one of the ribbons.  I thought charm squares would be great for this project.  I probably have at least 20 charm square packs (love them, can’t resist buying them).  I had our choir director help me pick out which ones to use based on the recipients color likes.  The squares chosen were so wonderful…I love the colors.

Block Party Studios had the perfect printed fabric panel – Prayer Shawl Fabric Panel.  The verses were absolutely perfect for the quilt.  I gave the squares to my talented daughter and she came up with the perfect layout.  Our church was studying the book “The Circle Maker” by Mark Batterson which encourages you to pray circles around your needs.  She took the verses from the prayer shawl panel and made a large circle out of them…brilliant…why didn’t I think of that.

I just did ditch quilting to secure the blocks.  Many prayer quilts just rely on the yarn or ribbon to tie the quilt, but I wanted a little more stability.  It was an enjoyable project, but I needed to do it in a couple days so that was a little stressful.
