Cupcakes and Birthday Quilts

This year for my birthday I decided I wanted to sew a few quilt tops for fun.   One of the tops was a kit I bought from the Fat Quarter Shop.  I love the beautiful kits they put together and this one reminded me of Spring.  Since my birthday is in cold January, what better way to spend the weekend.  The white sashing/framing fabric really sets off the bright and fun colors of this kit.  This quilt will fun to quilt on the frame with a floral motif from the Quilt Motion library.  Now just to find the right thread….

The second top I pieced for “birthday weekend” was Halloween CatchANap quilt.  It was made from fat quarters and a theme fabric.  I got this adorable kit this past fall on the Central Virginia Tour de Quilt.  Halloween is my favorite quilting holiday (well maybe next to Christmas of course).

I love the colors in this kit and couldn’t resist buying it even though my house is full of Halloween quilts.  It is a simple pattern but so much fun to look at.  I can see pumpkins as the quilting motif for this quilt.  Now if I could only get good at the QuiltCad program and draw my own designs.  I need my daughter’s artistic talent in designing my own quilting patterns.  I’m much better at free motion squiggles.

The absolute best part of birthday weekend was my special treat.  My daughter made me Thin Mint Cupcakes.  Wow, I can still remember the wonderful flavors she used.  Aren’t they yummy looking?

I gave up my last box of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies for this wonderful recipe.  She used mint extract and the cookies and used her own artistic talent to create these treats.  I wish I had one right now.  The cookie garnish on top made the cupcakes so tasty.  At least I have the photos to remind me of the great birthday weekend.

Until next time…happy sewing & quilting!
